Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Allenville, Illinois. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair assessment, we excel in hair analysis and offer testing sites nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. Hair evaluations can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug screening processes. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are favoring this method over traditional urine tests. Hair tests offer longer detection periods, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, minimizing tampering risk. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent uses, detecting substances within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has gained recognition as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of drug and alcohol usage by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug usage for a period of up to around three months. The process of collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, with approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp, is necessary to obtain 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for conducting screening and confirmation tests. For EtG and other advanced tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. It is advised to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used instead. The reference to head hair pertains only to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug testing result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where the sample is incorporated into the lab’s system, including verification of proper sealing and shipping, assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any data entry not provided through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial, rapid evaluation for illicit drugs. While it is a cost-effective strategy for dismissing drug use in many samples, a positive result must be confirmed for judicial admissibility. Any samples that are presumptive positive during Screening will need an additional confirmation step.

When a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is extracted and prepared for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

For Confirmation of any positive screening, methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Resistant to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably challenging, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Reveals historical use: This test can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expensive: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may affect drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand, not the root underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Allenville, IL, offers superior benefits over traditional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, hair testing captures a larger detection window, providing a more complete picture of drug usage. Its capability to identify drug use for up to 90 days marks its distinct advantage.

Furthermore, hair tests deliver consistent results with a higher accuracy rate. This increased reliability makes them a preferred choice for employers who enforce zero-tolerance policies, surpassing traditional urine testing in effectiveness.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
