In Alto Pass, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our expertise extends to hair drug and alcohol testing, with facilities available nationwide for efficient hair sample analysis. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prevalence in drug testing protocols. Preferred over the traditional urine test, many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now require it. Employers adhering to strict drug policies, judicial authorities, and probation monitors use these tests for their extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record of drug and alcohol use, capturing biological markers within the hair strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair strictly. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the lab involves four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies if the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary review for drugs of abuse. While it is a budget-friendly way to dismiss drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-acceptable. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most intricate methodologies to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used to confirm any positive screening results. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes examination under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard, as well as the ISO/IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Provides historical usage data: It offers a drug use pattern over extended periods, and not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The superiority of hair follicle testing over urine testing in Alto Pass, IL, lies in its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests often provide a more comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history, making it a compelling choice for employers and legal authorities. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
