In Aroma Park, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have centers nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown of your head or body. Hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are vital for employers with strict no-drug use policies, judicial uses, and probation monitoring. A significant benefit is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected through observed processes making tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain precise for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a compelling method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers within the strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect hair, it’s somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (around the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to any other type of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and quick assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening serves as a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most specimens, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial batch for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening is conducted using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process, extending from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drugs for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test itself scrutinizes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

For residents in Aroma Park, IL, hair follicle testing provides distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. One of the major benefits is the accuracy in detection and reliability of results. Unlike urine tests that may only reflect recent drug use, hair tests offer a more comprehensive substance history review over an extended period.
This makes it viable for employers maintaining a drug-free policy with the assurance of valid results.

Urine tests have their place but hair tests deliver a longer detection window while demonstrating superior accuracy and nearly impossible to falsify results. They offer peace of mind by providing an effective method to screen for drug use helping businesses uphold zero-tolerance policies with confidence.

Extended Detection Window

In Aroma Park, IL, hair follicle testing reveals drug use history over up to 90 days. This gives employers a thorough understanding of applicants or employees' substance use. Compared to urine tests, which have a much shorter window, hair tests offer a period that is three times longer, making them invaluable in screening processes.

Employers benefit significantly from this extended window, as they gain deeper insights into long-term behavior rather than just recent use. With a longer detection period, hair testing serves as an effective tool to maintain workplace integrity and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Aroma Park, IL, offers a tamper-resistant alternative to traditional drug tests. The collection process ensures samples are less vulnerable to adulteration, thus providing unquestionable results and maintaining integrity. This reduction in sample tampering risks makes hair testing a highly reliable method for drug detection.

With its stringent collection process, hair testing eliminates doubt commonly associated with other testing methods. Its nature resists external manipulation, ensuring that individuals or employees being tested present a clear and honest depiction of drug use, leading to peace of mind and accurate evaluation of behavioral patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
