Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Ashkum, Illinois. For hair drug or alcohol testing needs, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, with testing centers in every city nationwide capable of performing these tests. You will need your hair to be between 1.5 to 2 inches long on the crown of your head, though body hair may also be used in most scenarios. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug detection. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer this test over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers. The extended detection period of these tests, typically up to 90 days, the observed collection process, and difficulty in falsifying results make it the superior choice for testing. However, for detecting drug use within the most recent 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as a potent instrument, hair testing excels in detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term historical record of alcohol and other drugs by securing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. A sample taken close to the scalp can unveil up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was suitably sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a primary swift analysis for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples considered presumptively positive in Screening demand a follow-up confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is extracted and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug testing as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceptionally challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs generally take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although typically called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
