In Ashmore, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing is available at testing centers across all U.S. cities, prepared to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is sufficient for testing. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG and offer other personalized testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years as the preferred method for drug screening. Instead of the conventional urine test, employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists are turning to hair drug tests. This approach is favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and probation services. Hair testing's key advantage lies in its extended detection period of up to 90 days, using a monitored collection, which is hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended history of alcohol and various drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly three-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jewelry scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary examination for drug abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptance. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection window.
  • Low likelihood of cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can show a pattern of drug use over a longer timeframe, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine testing in Ashmore, IL? The benefits are clear: hair testing provides unparalleled detection accuracy and reliability. Whereas urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests offer a more comprehensive timeline of drug history, tracing substances up to 90 days back. This expansive detection window offers a detailed insight into an individual's drug use, making it superior to traditional urine testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a significant advantage for employers in Ashmore, IL. This method detects drug use over an extended period of up to 90 days, providing a thorough understanding of an employee or applicant's substance history. With this long detection time, employers can make more informed decisions, assessing not only recent drug use but a broader perspective on an individual’s substance habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Ashmore, IL, hair follicle testing stands out as a tamper-resistant methodology. Compared to other testing methods, hair tests significantly reduce the possibility of sample adulteration. This robustness ensures the delivery of reliable and incontrovertible results. By eliminating the avenues for tampering, hair follicle tests uphold the integrity of the process, safeguarding the authenticity of the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
