Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Assumption, Illinois. For anyone in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair testing, available through our nationwide testing centers in cities across the country. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Many companies, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer this over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under supervision opt for hair tests. The significant advantage is the extended detection window, which can reach up to 90 days, gathered under observation, making it nearly foolproof. Although, for drug detection within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective approach for uncovering substance use. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, providing an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil), near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into the laboratory system. This phase includes ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry required outside an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick check for substances. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most specimens, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further Extraction. During this phase, substances are drawn from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized to comply with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It supplies a usage pattern over time, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternate testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
