Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Avon, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with testing centers located in every city Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. These hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Over the years, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle drug tests. Today, a multitude of employers, legal courts, and specialists in Substance Abuse advocate for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are particularly popular among employers with stringent drug-free policies, courts, and those monitoring individuals on probation. The standout feature of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days, collected through observable means, making it very challenging to deceive. Nonetheless, for drug usage within the past five days, urine tests remain unsurpassed in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective approach for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and other drugs by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to adulteration, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing approximately 200 strands of hair (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the specimen is made. We advise weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. In terms of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing phase of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective means to rule out drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for the result to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Yields historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and unique hair growth patterns can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
