In Beach Park, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it's a hair or alcohol test you need, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. With testing centers available across all cities nationwide, we make it easy to get a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair tests are versatile, able to analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction over other methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer this method over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals find hair tests particularly useful. Their biggest advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision and hard to tamper with. Yet, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a long-term record of alcohol and various substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month period of detection for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the recommended amount for assessment and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or screens exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure in the laboratory for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This involves confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data input not offered by an electronic chain of custody methodology.

Screening entails an initial swift inspection for substance abuse. Screening is an economical method to negate drug use for most samples, but a positive screen is required to be confirmed for it to be permissible in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial batch and processed for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (for example, urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection interval: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug evaluations are exceedingly tough to deceive, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical data: Offers a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are usually pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair dye and individual differences in hair growth can influence the metabolite concentration of drugs in the hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
