Accredited Drug Testing offers a thorough hair follicle drug testing service in Braidwood, Illinois. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with centers across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body is required. Hair tests can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, the shift towards including hair follicle drug testing has grown. Many employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse specialists now mandate hair drug tests, favoring them over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by workplaces with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation, due to their extended detection window — up to 90 days — alongside a supervised collection process that’s nearly impossible to tamper with. Meanwhile, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair traps biomarkers within its fibers, offering a historical record that spans months. When samples are taken close to the scalp, a detection period of up to about 90 days is possible for alcohol and other substances. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) near the scalp provides approximately 100mg, which is optimal for tests and confirmations. For EtG or tests over 10 panels, 150mg is ideal. It is best to measure samples using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal body hair sample can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a specimen is initially integrated into the lab system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry requirements not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening gives an initial rapid assessment for drugs. While cost-efficient for excluding drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumed positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing more complex to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used to confirm any positive screening findings. Samples that test presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter durations.
  • Difficult to falsify: Hair tests are challenging to manipulate, rendering the results more trustworthy.
  • Traceable usage pattern: It reveals drug usage trends over time, instead of just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other methods.
  • Varying results: Hair color and individual growth variations may influence metabolite concentration.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze the hair shaft, not the follicle itself beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
