In Broadwell, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those requiring tests for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair assessments is supported by a network of centers nationwide. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. This method allows for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options to be assessed.

The trend of including hair follicle testing in drug screenings has been rising. It’s often mandated by employers with strict drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers, instead of the more common urine test. This test's advantage lies in its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, its observed collection process, and the difficulty in tampering. However, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become a recognized method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair holds a continuous record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When sampling close to the scalp, hair can show drug and alcohol usage for a period extending up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

A specimen measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (equivalent to the volume of a #2 pencil) cut near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If head hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair is an alternative. When talking about head hair, we refer strictly to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Summary

The drug test processing in the laboratory involves four critical phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially processed into the lab's framework. This step involves confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid test for substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires validation for legal admissibility. Samples with preliminary positive results in Screening must undergo further confirmation testing.

For samples showing preliminary positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Preparation. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair in lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which explains the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Increased difficulty in cheating: The possibility of tampering with hair drug tests is minimal, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical use patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug use, not just recent consumption.

Disadvantages:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
