Complete hair follicle drug testing services are available at Accredited Drug Testing in Brooklyn, Illinois. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, our centers across the nation are equipped to conduct these evaluations. Your hair should ideally measure 1.5 to 2 inches, sourced from the crown or body. Among the various options, our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized further.

More organizations are opting for hair follicle drug testing in place of the usual urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer it due to zero-tolerance policy adherence. This method's advantage is its extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, making it difficult to tamper with. Yet, for recent substance use, within the last five days, urine tests maintain superior precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches from roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be used. Head hair denotes only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the primary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for it to be court-admissible. Samples that are Screen-positive provisionally require additional confirmation.

If a sample proves Screen-positive provisionally, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any Screen-positive result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All Screen-positive provisional samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's quite tough to cheat a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage history: It can show a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
