Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Brownfield, Illinois. Specializing in hair alcohol and drug screening, we operate centers in cities nationwide equipped for hair sample collection. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are collected. These tests can detect drug use, alcohol/ETG, and customized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probation officers, rely on hair tests due to their longer detection period, up to 90 days. Despite urine tests being more accurate for recent use within 5 days, hair tests provide an almost foolproof detection method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term substance use history by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair offers up to around a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair may be used. When mentioned, head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in the laboratory processes for deriving a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory's protocol. This step includes confirming that the specimen was securely sealed and dispatched, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial brisk assessment for abuse substances. While Screening provides a cost-efficient measure to exclude drug presence in most specimens, a positive result necessitates Confirmation to stand in legal proceedings. All specimens yielding a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a specimen indicates a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the preliminary sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before Confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification alongside ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike the briefer detection periods of urine tests.
  • Resilience to deception: Overcoming a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug usage across an extended duration instead of merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: There is an approximately 5-7 day window before drugs appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations often incur higher costs than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
