In Browning, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether for drug or alcohol analysis, we are the specialists in hair testing, available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Our tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have been included more often in drug testing protocols. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and substance abuse professionals, due to its extensive detection window up to 90 days and its resistance to tampering. Though hair tests are superior for long-term detection, urine tests remain the best choice for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-lasting record of drug and alcohol markers by entrapping them in the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair testing can reveal up to a three-month period of drug and alcohol use. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is perfect for screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a proportionate amount of body hair can be gathered. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The hair drug testing laboratory process consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the lab's workflow. This step ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, involves the assignment of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entails any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain-of-custody system.

Screening serves as an expedited preliminary assessment for drug presence. While screening is a budget-friendly approach for initially assessing drug use in most samples, positive results must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in initial screening require subsequent validation.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or oral fluid testing, highlighting the complexities of hair drug analysis.

The Confirmation of any positive screen is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with provisional positives are cleaned as necessary. The entire procedural workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter duration of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: The results are more reliable as cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging.
  • Offers historical insight: It gives a timeline of drug usage, offering more than just recent consumption data.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually more costly than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
