In Browns, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. For those needing drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, this service specializes in that area, with centers located in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our tests can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more commonplace in drug testing settings recently. Increasingly, employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer these over the urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation often turn to hair drug tests. The advantage of these tests is they detect drug use over a span of about 90 days and are difficult to manipulate, although urine tests remain more effective for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is perceived as a strong method for detecting drug and alcohol use. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers an extensive history of alcohol and drug consumption. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can reveal a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (around a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, deemed the ideal sample for both analysis and verification. For EtG supplements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. Here, head hair specifically refers to scalp hair; body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal procedures entailed in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample within a laboratory's system. This phase comprises verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a preliminary swift examination for substance abuse indicators. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result mandates confirmation to stand in court. Any presumptive positive findings from Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample is labeled presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much diminished concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), signifying why hair drug analysis is amongst the most challenging methods to execute.

Any affirmative screening result is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as required. The entirety of the lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Evading a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more trustworthy results.
  • Provides usage history: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drug traces in hair become identifiable approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests," the test primarily evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
