Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Buffalo Prairie, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers located nationwide ready to conduct these tests. For eligibility, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or another body part is generally needed. Hair tests can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly been used for drug screening in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers, rely on hair follicle tests for their long detection window of up to 90 days. Additionally, the observed collection process and difficulty of tampering make these tests trustworthy. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures long-term drug and alcohol consumption history by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands’ fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly three months of alcohol and drug usage history. Collection is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and it can be shipped with ease.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both testing and verification. For EtG, extended panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the hair sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. “Body hair” encompasses all other hair types (facial, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase of logging a specimen into the lab’s system. It involves ensuring the specimen was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not covered by electronic custody systems.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While cost-efficient, any positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples testing positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation process.

In cases of a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted and prepared for Extraction. This step involves isolating drugs from hair at notably lower levels than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), thus hair drug testing remains challenging.

Any confirmed positive screen is validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo washing if necessary. Every phase from Accessioning to Confirmation is certified under both CAP standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter timeframe for urine tests.
  • Difficult to evade: Evading a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring accurate results.
  • Tracks prior use: Provides a timeline of drug usage over extended periods, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect new usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing generally costs more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
