Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bureau, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you're seeking, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, providing centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or other body parts. Hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to other specific testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the method of choice for many in recent years. Employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by entities enforcing zero-tolerance policies and by those under probation. The significant advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, which offers a reliable collection method and is nearly impossible to adulterate. Urine tests, however, remain the best for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair shaft effectively captures biomarkers that reflect prolonged exposure to alcohol and drugs. When extracted near the scalp, hair can reveal evidence of drug or alcohol use over a period of up to three months. It is easy to gather, tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (about the same thickness as a #2 pencil) from the proximity of the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair is missing, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we mean scalp hair, and by body hair, we include all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory examination of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning of integrating the sample into a lab's framework. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not included in an electronic chain of custody protocol.

In the Screening phase, the sample undergoes a rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation before it is considered legally valid. Any samples yielding presumptive positives in Screening necessitate subsequent verification.

For samples indicated as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complex nature of hair-based drug testing.

Confirmation of all positive screenings is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples marked as presumptively positive undergo washing as necessary. The comprehensive processing, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to rigorous scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, beyond merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect very recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-ingestion.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Bureau, IL

Hair testing surpasses traditional urine tests with its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which often have a shorter detection window, hair tests can track drug use up to 90 days, providing comprehensive insights into an individual's substance history.

Employers seeking a stringent drug policy benefit from the observable collection and the difficulty of cheating a hair test. Hair testing's superiority lies in its impressive detection capabilities and its role as a deterrent to drug use in the workplace.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Bureau, IL

One of the remarkable advantages of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period. Unlike other methods, it captures a detailed history of drug use over a span of up to 90 days. This provides employers with a broad view of a potential or current employee's substance use history.

This longer detection window is crucial for maintaining workplace safety and ensuring a drug-free environment. Employers benefit from a clearer picture of an individual's habits, helping make informed hiring and policy decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
