Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Calvin, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with test centers available in cities across the Nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing processes. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly turn to hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with no-tolerance policies, courts, and for probation monitoring. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection, minimizing cheating. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for identifying the use of alcohol and drugs. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When taken from the scalp, a hair sample can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification purposes. For tests such as EtG and those exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the early stage of entering a sample into a lab's system. This includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, generating an unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not facilitated by an electronic system.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal proceedings. Any sample that is initially positive needs additional verification.

Should a sample test positive at the Screening stage, further hair from the primary sample is used for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The whole lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can uncover substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows usage trends: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variance: Hair color and personal differences in growth can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Calvin, IL outshines traditional urine testing methods in numerous ways. It offers superior detection accuracy by identifying substance use over a longer duration, effectively capturing ongoing usage. While urine tests are adequate for recent drug use, hair tests boast higher reliability and are less prone to manipulation. Many employers prefer the hair drug test for its robustness, ensuring adherence to zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

In Calvin, IL, one of the key benefits of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days. This allows employers to assess long-term substance use, providing a detailed overview of an individual's history. Understanding an applicant's or employee's substance use patterns over an extended period aids in making informed decisions. Hair testing serves as an insightful tool for screening potential or current employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Calvin, IL is highly esteemed for its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike other testing methods, it significantly reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration, securing reliable outcomes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
