Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Carol Stream, Illinois. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, they excel in hair testing with facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific needs in hair analysis.

In recent times, drug testing methods have evolved to favor hair follicle analysis. Employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse counselors now opt for hair drug evaluations rather than typical urine tests. Recognized by firms with strict no-drug policies, the legal system, and probationary individuals, hair tests offer superior benefits. They provide an extended drug detection window, usually spanning up to 90 days with a controlled collection process, making tampering almost impossible. However, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective tool for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures alcohol and other drug biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, providing a long-term usage history. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other type of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is logged into a lab's system. This step verifies if the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective to exclude drug use in most cases, any positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that test positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is particularly challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are methods employed for Confirming any positive Screening outcome. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical use data: They can reveal drug usage over a long period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug-testing methods, hair follicle testing emerges as the superior choice over traditional urine tests in Carol Stream, IL. Hair tests boast enhanced detection capabilities with a significantly wider detection window. Additionally, hair testing offers greater reliability, reducing instances of false results and ensuring that substance use over time is accurately identified.

Extended Detection Window

For employers in Carol Stream, IL, the hair follicle testing method offers a prolonged detection period that spans up to 90 days. This extensive observation window provides a comprehensive view of any individual's substance history. Whether for pre-employment screening or routine checks, this method ensures that employers garner critical insights into applicants’ or employees’ drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The reliability of hair follicle testing in Carol Stream, IL stems from its resistance to tampering. Compared to other methods, altering a hair sample is extremely challenging, thereby rendering the results unquestionable and trustworthy. This level of assurance is invaluable for maintaining integrity in drug testing programs across different industries.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
