Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations right in Cedarville, Illinois. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we operate centers in every city nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are used. Hair analyses can be tailored to detect alcohol, drugs, or other specific testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has become a favored method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers turn to hair tests for their lengthy detection period—up to 90 days—making them hard to deceive. However, urine tests are more accurate for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lasting record by capturing biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month window for detection of substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, the equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The major stages in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system, confirming proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial drug abuse check. Though cost-effective in excluding drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold in court. Samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity at the Screening stage, more hair from the sample is prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed pre-confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower window.
  • Hinders cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus results tend to be more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It offers a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Cedarville, IL

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests, particularly in Cedarville. One standout benefit is the extended detection window; while urine tests often identify recent use, hair testing captures a longer history of substance use, up to 90 days. This makes it an ideal choice for employers adhering to strict drug policies.

Moreover, the accuracy and reliability of hair tests are far superior. Unlike urine tests, which can be manipulated, hair tests are nearly tamper-proof, emphasizing their dependability. By choosing hair testing, businesses in Cedarville gain an effective tool to monitor and maintain a drug-free work environment, ensuring safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Cedarville, IL

In Cedarville, hair follicle testing provides an extensive detection timeframe, much longer than traditional methods such as urine testing. This method allows for the detection of drug use up to 90 days prior, offering a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history. Employers benefit by gaining insight into patterns of use, beyond just recent consumption.

Utilizing this extended window, businesses in Cedarville can make more informed decisions regarding hiring and employee monitoring. The ability to see a wider history of substance use helps maintain a workplace that is safe and compliant with zero-tolerance drug policies. Hair tests thus contribute to a vigilant and prudent approach to workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
