In Chadwick, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Should you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, we are specialists in this area, with testing facilities available across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence for its reliable detection. It is increasingly mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts, favoring it over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers often prefer hair tests for their extended detection period—up to 90 days. They are nearly impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting very recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, moderately hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair—the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it’s advisable to have 150mg. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. 'Head hair' specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial setup of a sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from a digital chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective measure to eliminate drug use in the majority of cases, a screen yielding positive requires confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening need further validation.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to perform.

Any positive result from screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use spanning up to 90 days vs. urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenges in circumventing: It is exceedingly challenging to evade a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: Offers insight into drug use patterns over time rather than immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There’s about a 5-7 day period before drugs become evident in hair.
  • Price: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth variations can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
