Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Chandlerville, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers nationwide for your convenience. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation requirements. The chief advantage is they track drug use over a longer period, generally up to 90 days, involve a supervised collection, and are nearly foolproof. However, for detecting very recent drug use, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the hair. When taken near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal drug and alcohol intake over a span of roughly 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5 inch sample, consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximating the width of a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we specify scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses every other type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a specimen into a lab's system. This ensures that the specimen was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic custodial system.

Screening represents an initial swift assessment for drug traces. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug presence in many samples, a positive indication mandates verification to be valid in legal settings. Any samples testing presumptive positive during Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation test.

Should a sample be suspected positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. Here, drug residues are removed from hair at lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is notably complex.

Positive results in Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each assumed positive is cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 credentials.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests, which have a limited span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, increasing the reliability of results.
  • Provides historical data: They facilitate understanding of substance use over a duration, beyond mere recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair-based tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and other individual hair growth factors can impact metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
