Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Channel Lake, Illinois. If you are in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, our specialty is in hair testing with facilities available in cities across the country, capable of administering hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for testing. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Recent trends have shown a significant rise in the use of hair follicle drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation utilize hair tests because they offer a longer detection period—up to 90 days. This method involves an observed collection, reducing chances for manipulation, though urine tests remain most precise for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection duration for alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for analysis and verification. For EtG enhancements, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, only scalp hair is considered. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial, swift assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective method to dismiss drug consumption in the majority of cases, a favorable screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples presenting a presumptive positive result during Screening need secondary verification.

In instances where a sample yields a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any favorable screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as warranted. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection timespan.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
