Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Chebanse, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in these tests and have centers in cities across the nation capable of performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body. Hair testing can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a reliable method for detecting substance use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer it over urine tests for its effectiveness. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation cases, mainly for their extensive detection window, which can be up to 90 days. Unlike urine tests, these are collected in a monitored setting, greatly reducing the chance of tampering. For recent drug use, however, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by preserving biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug use extending back approximately 3 months. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen accurately. If scalp hair isn’t an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. In discussions of head hair, we mean scalp hair solely, whereas body hair refers to all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This comprises confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective means of excluding drug use across most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples with presumptive positives during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples displaying presumptive positives in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing prior to confirmation as required. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, which is longer than the detection period for urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is tremendously challenging, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides usage trends: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use, showing usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the subscalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine tests in Chebanse, IL, hair testing emerges as superior in both detection and reliability. Hair tests offer a much longer detection window and greater resistance to tampering, giving employers a more accurate perspective on an individual's substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
