Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assays in Cherry, Illinois. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair analysis is supported by numerous nationwide centers capable of conducting the tests. Ideally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. We assess samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair evaluations.

Lately, using hair follicle examinations for detecting drugs has gained traction. Organizations, judicial systems, and addiction experts increasingly opt for hair over traditional urine tests. Those with strict drug-free mandates, judicial authorities, or probationers prefer hair testing due to its extended detection window—up to 90 days—and secure observation protocols, which make deception nearly impossible. Yet, urine assays remain the go-to for drug intake from the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands, providing a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for these substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for screening and confirming results. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of incorporating a sample into a laboratory's system, involving verification of proper sealing and shipment, assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is economical for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a more complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: The test can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Within the Cherry, IL domain, hair follicle analysis excels over customary urine tests by offering superior detection. While urine tests capture recent drug use, hair analysis reveals drug patterns over months. This expanded insight ensures enhanced detection success and reliability, confirming hair tests as the preferred choice for comprehensive substance monitoring.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle evaluations provide an enlarged detection spectrum up to 90 days, providing Cherry, IL employers a broad reflection of an individual's substance history. This prolonged analysis period enables a deeper understanding of an applicant's drug usage, supporting informed decisions on hiring or continued employment, based on a broader overview.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
