Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Chesterville, Illinois. Specializing in hair analysis, we operate testing centers all across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to test for specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular choice for drug testing, often preferred by employers with drug-free policies, courts, and probation services. This method is favored over the traditional urine test because it offers an extended detection period of up to 90 days and is exceedingly difficult to circumvent. However, for drug use detected within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a significant resource for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, offering a long-term record of substance use. When specimens are taken close to the scalp, they can provide roughly a three-month detection window for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a recommended 150mg of the specimen should be collected. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be sourced. When we mention head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within the laboratory’s system. This process confirms that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplemental data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid drug abuse check. While Screening provides a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage in most samples, confirming a positive screen is necessary for it to be court-admissible. All samples that are tentatively positive in Screening do require further confirmation.

Should a sample show tentative positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for further preparation in Extraction. In this phase, drug extraction occurs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples are subject to washing prior to confirmation as applicable. The complete laboratory process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a comprehensive pattern of drug use over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
