Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Chrisman, Illinois. Whether you require drug or alcohol testing using hair samples, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide, with facilities in every city ready to serve your needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, and samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or through customized protocols.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained traction as a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists frequently select hair analysis over traditional urine tests. This is particularly true for institutions with strict drug policies, court mandates, and probation requirements. The principal advantage of hair testing is its extended detection range—up to 90 days—and its impenetrable nature against tampering, compared to urine tests, which remain most valid for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as a long-term recorder of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. If hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to nearly 3 months for both alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, quite resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, we solely refer to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen into the laboratory's system. This step includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for the presence of drugs. Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most cases, but a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for it to be legally defensible. Any presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It unveils a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
