Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Claremont, Illinois. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is supported by nationwide centers capable of conducting such tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or elsewhere on the body. Our tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance screening. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists increasingly favor hair tests over the standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers are examples using this method. The method's major advantage is a longer detection span of up to 90 days, making it hard to cheat, though for recent use detection within 5 days, urine tests are most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair that are growing. When cut close to the scalp, hair can indicate usage of alcohol and drugs over roughly a 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to collect, not easily altered, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp generates 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This phase includes ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to hold up in court. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening need secondary affirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this step, drugs are removed from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can disclose drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a timeline of drug use over a sustained period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, though the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
