Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Clark Center, Illinois. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing and provides facilities across all cities Nationwide equipped to administer hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other specialized hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a common method for drug screening. Many businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are utilized by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationers. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its long detection period, typically up to 90 days, with observed sample collection making it virtually tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended record of drug and alcohol use by trapping biomarkers in the growing hair strand's fibers. When cut near the scalp, hair can present a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches composed of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panel tests, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is advised. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase where a sample is inputted into a laboratory’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning an LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substance abuse. While cost-effective, Screening is primarily used to exclude drug use for most samples, but a positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptability. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require additional confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positive results in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, the drug is extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex to perform.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review adhering to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thereby providing more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use over several months, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
