In Clay City, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers a full range of hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're seeking hair or alcohol tests, our specialized facilities nationwide, including those in your local area, are ready to assist. Hair from the crown or body (usually 1.5 to 2 inches long) is generally used for testing, which can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other specialized requirements.

Over recent years, the trend has shifted towards hair follicle drug tests as the preferred method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for these tests over the traditional urine method. Adopting a hair follicle test is beneficial for zero-tolerance workplaces, probation, and legal situations due to its up to 90-day detection window, observed collection, and inability to be easily altered. However, for drugs used in the past 5 days, urine tests hold higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair exhibits a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for evaluation and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If head hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When indicating head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four steps involved in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial quick examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective strategy to eliminate drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptability. Any samples presumably positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to cheating: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, thus providing more accurate results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and traditional urine tests in Clay City, IL, hair testing stands out for its superior detection capabilities and reliability. Hair tests trace drug use back up to 90 days, a timeline urine tests can't match. This detailed span offers a comprehensive history, ensuring employers make informed decisions based on accurate substance use patterns.

Accuracy and trustworthiness distinguish hair follicle testing over standard urine tests. With its extensive detection window, hair testing captures long-term drug use while frequently providing more reliable results. In Clay City, this enhanced accuracy means fewer false negatives, promoting a drug-free environment with integrity.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Clay City, IL, offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, a significant advantage over other testing methods. This prolonged timeframe provides a holistic view of a person's drug use history, helping employers understand long-term behavior rather than recent consumption, as happens with shorter-window methods.

The extensive detection period hair follicle tests provide makes them invaluable for companies in Clay City seeking a wide-reaching insight into their employees' substance use. By looking at up to three months of history, employers gain a comprehensive understanding, crucial for maintaining workplace safety and reliability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

With its tamper-resistant nature, hair follicle testing in Clay City, IL, minimizes the chances of sample adulteration, delivering valid results that can be trusted. Unlike other methods, these tests are difficult to cheat, assuring decision-makers and individuals alike of their authenticity and reliability in substance detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
