In Crystal Lawns, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this type of testing, boasting facilities across cities Nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These tests are versatile, able to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, the trend in drug testing leans more towards the hair follicle method. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now often favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Zero-tolerance workplaces, the judiciary, and probationers benefit from hair tests’ extended drug use detection, covering up to 90 days. Such tests are observed, making them hard to cheat, yet for usage within the past 5 days, urine tests still excel in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have increasingly become a significant method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a timeline capturing alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair. When extracted close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, fairly challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair segment of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal volume for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is permissible. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary integration of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This phase includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid analysis for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal validation. Samples that indicate a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

When a sample demonstrates a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternatives (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most intricate approach.

Verification of any positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before verification as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Verification is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect substance use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring higher accuracy in the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of substance use across a period, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs take around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth might alter the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis examines the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
