Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dallas City, Illinois. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with testing centers across the country that can conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has been more common for drug testing. Various employers, courts, and professionals in Substance Abuse prefer this method over the usual urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are popular among employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. The main advantage is a much longer drug use detection window, generally up to 90 days, under supervision, making it difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a robust means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by ensnaring biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection range for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG and additional tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening represents a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use on most samples, results require confirmation to hold up in court. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need further verification.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the main specimen to prepare for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other test methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo pre-confirmation washing where necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that feature a limited detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: The integrity of hair drug tests makes them more reliable due to the difficulty in tampering with them.
  • Captures usage patterns: Hair tests provide a timeline of drug consumption over an interval, capturing more than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Substance detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur greater costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Variabilities such as hair pigment and personal disparities in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", this assessment examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
