Accredited Drug Testing facilitates comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Danvers, Illinois. If a hair analysis for drug or alcohol use is required, we specialize in such testing with locations in every city nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from the head or body, is needed and can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific purposes.

Recently, drug testing commonly involves a hair follicle method. Hair analysis is now often preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies and legal entities favor it for its extended detection up to 90 days. This method, collected under supervision, ensures accuracy, unlike the urine test, which remains best for detecting recent usage, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses have gained recognition as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, harder to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step confirms that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial assessment for abused drugs. Although Screening presents an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples that are provisionally positive in Screening require secondary verification.

When a sample is provisionally positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), defining hair drug testing as a challenging practice to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen findings occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All provisionally positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Details historical use: It can illustrate a drug usage trend over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual growth discrepancies can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests surpass urine testing in Danvers for several reasons. Notably, they offer higher detection accuracy compared to urine tests. This makes hair testing the ideal method for employers who need definitive results.

Traditional urine testing pales in comparison to hair follicle analysis. The superior reliability of hair tests rests in their ability to detect longer-term drug use rather than just recent activity, common with urine testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

In Danvers, IL, the appeal of hair follicle testing largely stems from its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain insight into the long-term substance habits of applicants or employees.

With a longer look-back period than typical tests, hair analysis offers employers a comprehensive review of an individual's drug-use behavior over a substantial timeframe, aiding in more informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the primary attractions of hair follicle tests in Danvers is the reduced risk of tampering. These tests are highly tamper-resistant, ensuring credible and unquestionable results that stakeholders can trust.

The integrity of hair follicle testing makes it nearly immune to sample manipulation, thus providing results that are reliable for legal and professional evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
