Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Darwin, Illinois. If you require a hair or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair examinations, with centers in every city nationwide for your convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair examinations can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, drug testing processes increasingly feature hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over urine analyses. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers rely on these screenings. Hair tests offer a 90-day detection period, are supervised during collection, and are very difficult to manipulate, while urine tests remain preferable for drugs used within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Sampling hair at the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use within a roughly 90-day detection period. It is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both testing and confirmation purposes. For EtG extensions and tests exceeding ten panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair. 'Body hair' describes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in lab processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates initial sample processing into a lab's inventory. This step ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for illegal substances. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient method to assess most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed for courtroom acceptance. Samples testing positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation step.

Should a sample test positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, the drugs are isolated from the hair at a significantly reduced concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of positive results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo washing as necessary. The complete procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation follows both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines for Hair and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Resistance to cheating: Hair drug tests are harder to tamper with, offering increased accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: It can map drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing types.
  • Result disparities: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure tests the hair strands rather than the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
