In Davis, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field with testing centers available in all cities across the nation. A minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the crown of your head, but body hair may also be used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to other testing needs.

In recent times, the popularity of hair follicle drug tests has been increasing. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug-use policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. Their main advantage is the extended detection period for drug use, generally up to 90 days, making it very difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the developing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can supply a detection window for alcohol and drugs extending up to about 3 months. The collection of hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample length of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair might be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively pertains to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test samples involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial phase of logging a sample into a laboratory's system. This encompasses verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a rapid preliminary examination for drug substances. Although Screening offers an economical approach to excluding drug presence in most samples, positive screenings must be validated to be legally admissible. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), as a result, hair drug screening stands as the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening result's confirmation is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use extending up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistant to deception: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Surpasses Urine Testing in Davis, IL, is clear when comparing their benefits. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
