Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings, Accredited Drug Testing operates in Davis Junction, Illinois. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol evaluations, our national centers offer extensive testing options. Hair samples, preferably 1.5 to 2 inches in length from the scalp or body, are required for accurate analysis. These tests help detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific needs.

Lately, hair follicle testing has increasingly replaced traditional drug testing methods. Preferred by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse agencies, it offers a longer detection window than urine tests. Hair tests suit organizations with strict anti-drug mandates, those in legal proceedings, or individuals on probation. Unique advantages include a 90-day detection period, conducted under observation, limiting the potential for manipulation. Yet, for detecting recent drug use, urine testing remains precise for periods up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows, hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use. With collection near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage for up to around a 3-month window. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" pertains specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed within the laboratory’s system. This stage includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for drug abuse. Although it's a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a favorable screen must undergo confirmation to hold up in legal contexts. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from the hair at intensities much lower than those in other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), attributing to the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

For confirmation of any positive screening outcome, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are utilized. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed, if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug presence for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: The accuracy of hair drug tests is upheld due to the difficulty in cheating them.
  • Shows historical trends: It reveals a pattern of drug activity over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and personal hair growth variances.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly misused, as the test targets the hair strand, not the scalp's follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
