In Dawson, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair analysis, with convenient testing facilities available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your body or the crown of your head is required. Our hair tests can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs utilize hair tests due to their extended detection period—up to 90 days, providing a reliable and almost tamper-proof collection process. Nevertheless, for detecting very recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Through its strands, hair captures biomarkers that reveal long-term substance use. When taken from near the scalp, hair provides a detection timeframe of up to three months for both drugs and alcohol. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, it's advisable to gather 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, the same quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory phases of processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning manages the entry of a sample into the lab's system, confirming proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any missing data entry that the electronic chain of custody system doesn't provide.

Screening performs an initial examination for drug presence. It's economical for negating drug use in most samples, yet a positive result must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Thus, any samples with a positive result in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Positive screening confirmations are done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all positively presumed samples undergo cleaning if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and carries accreditation in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical perspective: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time rather than capturing only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection limits: Approximately 5-7 days are needed before drugs present in hair after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Disparities in factors like hair color and individual hair growth can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these assessments analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
