Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in De Witt, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with locations in cities across the country that can conduct these tests. Individuals typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body for testing. Hair samples can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals have started to favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Used by organizations with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probationary programs, the key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, carried out under supervision, and difficult to subvert. Nevertheless, for detecting very recent drug use, specifically within the past five days, urine testing remains the most reliable choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by trapping biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected close to the scalp, hair can provide about a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to adulterate, and simple to ship.

An ideal sample for screening and confirmation is a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil), collected nearest to the scalp to yield 100mg of hair. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system, verifying correct sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use across most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to hold up in court. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a Screening stage sample is presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, making results more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
