Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Deer Creek, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with testing centers nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method in drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals favor a hair drug test over a standard urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are employed by organizations with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probationary individuals. A chief advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, obtained through an observed process, and is difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests are most precise for detecting use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a significant tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered from near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from as close to the scalp as possible will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of processing a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry that an electronic chain of custody system doesn’t provide.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for detecting drug abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, any positive screening result requires confirmation to be admissible in legal contexts. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a markedly reduced concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the more complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive outcomes from screening is executed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which provide a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It can offer a drug usage pattern over time, not just information on recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test focuses on analyzing the hair strand rather than the hair follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over urine testing in Deer Creek, IL reveals numerous benefits. One such advantage is its far superior detection accuracy and reliability compared to traditional urine tests. Hair testing can identify drug use over an extended period, offering a more comprehensive assessment of substance history, unlike short-term indicators provided by urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Deer Creek, IL extends the detection window up to 90 days, offering employers an insightful view of an individual's substance use history. This prolonged observation period enhances understanding, painting a more complete picture of habitual use that urine tests, with their limited detection capability, cannot match.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Employing hair follicle testing in Deer Creek, IL reduces the likelihood of tampering, as hair samples are difficult to adulterate, ensuring credible results. This method's inherent resistance to manipulation establishes its utility, providing irrefutable evidence that bolsters the integrity and reliability of drug testing outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
