Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Deer Park, Illinois. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair testing, we have facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, to perform these tests, clients need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Our hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for different testing needs.

In the past few years, there's been an increase in using hair follicle tests for drug detection. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing is favored by employers with strict drug policies, legal systems, and probationary bodies due to its extended detection capability—up to 90 days—through direct observation, making it nearly foolproof against tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use, within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair naturally archives a prolonged history of alcohol and drug involvement by entrapping biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for mailing.

A 1.5-inch collection of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in processing a drug test outcome in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial, rapid evaluation for illicit drug use. While Screening is an economical method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for judicial use. Samples suspected to be positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It provides an overview of drug habits over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A period of approximately 5-7 days is required before drugs become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
