Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Deerfield, Illinois. Specialized in both hair and alcohol testing, we operate testing centers nationwide, ready to facilitate your hair test needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair can be sampled to test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or a tailored testing solution.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now frequently opt for hair over urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation services rely on hair tests, as they offer a substantial 90-day detection window and are exceedingly difficult to adulterate. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can supply nearly a 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, considered the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advisable to measure the sample weight with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a laboratory encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into the lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry that isn't handled by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Despite its cost-efficiency in ruling out drugs in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary verification.

Should a sample indicate positive results during Screening, further hair is taken from the existing specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening employs techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation conforms to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Merits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can unveil drug usage up to 90 days prior, which is longer than the detection period for urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers usage patterns: They reveal drug utilization trends across periods, not solely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot pinpoint recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair typically commences 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strands instead of the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
