Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dennison, Illinois. For those needing tests for drugs or alcohol, we are specialists with testing facilities across the nation, including all cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary for most tests. Our hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide customized options.

Recently, using hair follicle tests has become more common in drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer these over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation individuals are increasingly using hair tests. The key advantage? It detects drug use over a longer period—up to 90 days—and is extremely hard to manipulate, although for last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has become recognized as an essential method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can extend the detection timeframe for drugs and alcohol to a period of roughly three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable mass of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we are exclusively referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test outcome in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s procedure. It involves checking that the sample has been correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional information entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While it is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, any screen that tests positive must be confirmed for it to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening test is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory journey from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidance and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 stipulations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection range: Hair drug tests can reveal drug intake for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug tes t, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a usage pattern over an extended period, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair generally takes about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Frequently dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle residing below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
