Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Divernon, Illinois. Should you require a hair or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair assessments, and operates centers across Nationwide locations capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair can be tested. Hair testing encompasses analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified options.

Recently, drug assessment methodologies have increasingly leaned towards hair follicle tests. Replacing standard urine tests, many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now demand hair drug evaluations. Employers with strict drug prohibitions, judicial entities, and probation officers utilize these tests. Their main advantage is an extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, coupled with difficult manipulation. For recent 5-day usage, urine tests remain superior in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a strong method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, challenging to alter, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. Regarding head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair comprises all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial integration into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for signs of drug use. Though it's a budget-friendly way to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positives in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of conducting hair drug screenings.

Confirmation of a positive screening result occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Shows past usage: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent ingestion: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
