In Dowell, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If a hair-based drug or alcohol examination is required, we are experts in such testing. Our countrywide network includes centers in every city ready to conduct these evaluations. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body suffices. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Today, drug testing methods often incorporate hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and agencies monitoring probation compliance. Their key advantage lies in a detection window of up to 90 days, crafted from an observed collection, making cheating almost impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are now acknowledged as an effective method to track drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer a prolonged drug and alcohol history by encapsulating biomarkers in the growing hair's fibers. When taken from near the scalp, it can indicate up to about a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a lab's system. This process checks the sample's seal and shipping validity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the first quick evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is economical to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court acceptability. Any samples assumed positive in Screening need further verification.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair screening is notably challenging.

Any positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positives are washed before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory workflow is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is very difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronicles past usage: It reflects a usage pattern over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Limited to past use: Drugs require 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing typically costs more than other drug tests.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle itself under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
