Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Downers Grove, Illinois. When you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled. We have facilities across all cities in the nation to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, which can be sourced from the scalp or body. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor specific hair testing needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence as a method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and probation officers rely on hair tests. The main advantage is its extended detection window, revealing drug use for up to 90 days, and requires supervised collection, making tampering difficult. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting substance use. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding markers within the fibers of the growing hair. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can show a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drug use. It is easy to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for testing. For EtG tests, add-ons, or tests exceeding ten panels, it's suggested to gather 150mg. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advisable. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, involving entering a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and handled properly, assigns an LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data input as necessary if the electronic chain of custody system doesn't provide it.

During Screening, there's a preliminary check for substances. Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, but a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening need further confirmation.

If presumptive positivity is noted during Screening, more hair is taken for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair analysis is among the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation of positive results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated following CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage history: Tests can map a pattern of drug activity over time, unlike tests recording only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent activity: Drugs only become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair testing generally costs more compared to other methods.
  • Result variation: Hair color and growth variations can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on hair strands rather than the follicles beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Follicle Testing surpasses urine testing in Downers Grove, IL, due to its superior accuracy and reliability. While urine tests can detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader detection range, showcasing substance use over months. This makes them invaluable for employers and organizations seeking comprehensive insight into an individual's drug use history.

Extended Detection Window

The key advantage of hair follicle testing in Downers Grove, IL lies in its extensive detection window. Employers benefit from the ability to scrutinize drug use over a 90-day period, offering a thorough assessment of an applicant's or worker's substance practice. Such extensive evaluation is critical for making informed hiring and retention decisions in any business.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Downers Grove, IL, hair follicle tests are favored for their robust tamper resistance. Unlike other methods, hair tests are challenging to adulterate, ensuring the integrity and reliability of the results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
