Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Dubuque, Illinois. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we possess testing facilities across all U.S. cities to conduct a hair test. Typically, hair from the crown of the head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, can be utilized. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options as per requirements.

In recent years, drug testing approaches have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. They are chosen by employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The chief advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days. These tests are conducted under observation, making them highly resistant to tampering. Despite their advantages, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system, ensuring the sample was securely sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require further verification.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This involves drawing drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing a very challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing if required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical patterns: It reveals patterns of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In East Dubuque, IL, opting for hair follicle testing over urine testing presents various benefits. Hair testing offers an extended detection window, capturing drug use over a 90-day period. This significant advantage over traditional urine tests empowers employers to make more informed decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
