Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in East Galesburg, Illinois. If a hair or alcohol analysis is needed, our specialists are ready to help, with facilities nationwide that conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Tests can investigate drugs, alcohol/ETG or offer tailored hair analysis options.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests for screenings has gained popularity. Increasingly, employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Used by those with strict no-drug policies, the tests offer the advantage of a longer detection period up to 90 days, ensure supervised collection, and are nearly foolproof. However, to identify drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Testing hair is now recognized as a significant method for detecting substance use. Hair captures a detailed timeline of drug and alcohol usage by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil in size) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For comprehensive tests exceeding 10 panels, and for EtG add-ons, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into a laboratory's database. This process includes confirming the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any other data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an early rapid check for drug misuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use on most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be valid for legal use. Any sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening will need secondary confirmation.

If the Screening stage returns a presumptive positive, additional hair from the original sample is extracted for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are leached from the hair at lower concentrations compared to using other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of any positive screening result uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Testing is hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is very complicated, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical data provision: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Diverse factors like hair color and hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, but the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When assessing drug use in East Galesburg, IL, hair follicle tests hold a decided edge over traditional urine tests. Not only do they offer higher detection accuracy, but their reliability reduces false negatives. Unlike urine tests, which only capture recent drug usage, hair tests reveal a broader timeline, making them a superior choice for comprehensive screenings.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in East Galesburg, IL can benefit from hair follicle testing's extended detection window. Covering up to 90 days, these tests provide insights into long-term substance use patterns. This broader detection period gives a clearer view of an individual's history, helping employers make informed decisions regarding their workforce's safety and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
