Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Edgar, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you seek, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers nationwide equipped to perform such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair testing can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has grown in popularity. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers, judiciary bodies, and individuals on probation frequently opt for these tests. The key advantage is its long detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with a monitored collection process, making it nearly invulnerable to cheating, though urinalysis is accurate for up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection duration of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sample for screening and confirmation is a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands (amounting to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. Head hair pertains only to scalp hair, whereas body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for substance use. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug consumption for many samples, a positive result from Screening must be proven to be legitimate for court acceptance. Any samples deemed presumptively positive require subsequent confirmation.

Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening have additional hair taken from the original sample and proceed to Extraction. The drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation follows any positive screening result using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptively positive samples undergo washing as needed. The complete laboratory pathway from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insights: This method can outline a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Price: Generally higher expense compared to other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test in reality examines the strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
