Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Elburn, IL. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, and our testing centers are present in all major cities across the country to conduct these tests. Typically, you will require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, or body hair can be used. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent developments, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Increasingly, employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period for drugs, usually up to 90 days, collected through an observed collection process, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand, offering a long-term view of substance use. When gleaned near the scalp, hair can present a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screens exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. In terms of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result revolves around four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step ensures that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug consumption in the majority of cases, a positive result must be confirmed to hold weight in legal situations. Samples that are potentially positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at a substantially lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any screen-positive result is undertaken via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples yielding presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which present a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing procedures.
  • Variable outcomes: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.
