In Elmwood, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. Whether it's detecting drugs or alcohol, our specialized hair testing facilities are available across the nation. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, our tests cater to various substances, including alcohol/ETG, ensuring a wide array of options.

The method of hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in recent years. This testing option is being increasingly adopted over standard urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Primarily because hair tests offer an extended drug detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, making it difficult to tamper with these tests. However, a urine test remains superior for detecting drug use within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. The hair captures a prolonged history of these substances by storing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When the hair is clipped near the scalp, it offers close to a three-month timeline for noticeable detection of alcohol and various drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is a prime quantity for both screening and subsequent confirmation. Should EtG, additional, and/or more extensive analysis beyond 10 panels be necessary, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be retrieved, an equivalent sample from body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes the primary stages of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the first phase of integrating a specimen into a lab’s framework. This step encompasses checking that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment to identify drugs that have been abused. Although Screening is an economical strategy to dismiss drug use in most cases, a positive result from screening requires verification for legal validity. Samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate further Confirmation.

If a sample tests as presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than observed with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive Screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation, as needed. The comprehensive laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that offer a shorter timeframe for detection.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It displays a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just detecting recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
