In Elwood, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Specializing in hair tests for both drugs and alcohol, we operate testing centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for a test. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing.

Over recent years, drug screening has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair analyses over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies and legal systems. The key advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, with observed collections and reduced tampering. Yet, urine tests remain superior for drug use detected within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective instrument for determining drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair encapsulate markers over time, offering a prolonged record of substance use. When hair is harvested near the scalp, it can reveal a detection timeframe of nearly three months for substances like alcohol. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipment.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), and located nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair which is optimal for analysis and verification. For elevated tests such as EtG or beyond 10 panels, it's advisable to utilize 150mg of hair. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is insufficient, a comparable quantity of body hair may be harvested. The term head hair implies scalp hair alone, whereas body hair encompasses additional types of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The core phases in laboratory analysis of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary phase of integrating a specimen into the lab’s system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes supplemental data input absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails an initial swift examination for illicit substances. Even though Screening provides a cost-efficient technique to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive outcome in this stage necessitates confirmation to hold validity in legal proceedings. Specimens offering presumptive positive results in Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

When a specimen is presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are then separated from hair in concentrations lower than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing poses elevated challenges compared to other methods.

Positive screenings undergo Validation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples yielding presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. The exhaustive lab protocol from Accessioning to Validation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directives alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair analysis can identify drug consumption up to 90 days back, surpassing the shorter timeframes of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's considerably challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of outcomes.
  • Yields historical insights: It divulges a sequence of drug consumption over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often carry higher costs compared to alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair shade and personal differences in hair growth may influence the levels of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the strand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
